And there are eight horizontal daytime running lights shining out from behind the bold cascading grille. The side panels have multiple sharp creases. Most pickup C-pillars run straight up and down. The part of the exterior design that most differentiates the Santa Cruz from other pickup trucks is the sharper rake of the A-pillar that supports the front windshield, and the angled C-pillar in back. The 2022 Santa Cruz employs eight daytime running lamps (DRLs) with a parametric jewel design. Any pickup nearly the length of a Cadillac Escalade shouldn’t be considered compact. Dimensionally, it’s a bit of uncharted territory, as existing midsize pickups that are sometimes called compacts, including the Ridgeline, Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado, are all about a foot longer. Having two rows of seats plus the four-foot truck bed helps make it 195.7 inches long, 75.0 inches wide and 66.7 inches tall, about 14 inches shorter and approximately 4 inches narrower and shorter than a Honda Ridgeline. What makes the Santa Cruz unique is its small size relative to all other pickups. Jose Munoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, says the Santa Cruz “breaks open an all-new segment territory, both for Hyundai and the industry as a whole.” He adds, “Open-bed flexibility coupled with closed-cabin security meets the changing everyday needs of its adventure-oriented buyers….Our customers will wonder just how they managed before owning one.” Hyundai, however, takes pains to suggest the Santa Cruz is not just any old pickup but a sport adventure vehicle, or “SAV … urban adventurers.” For years, BMW has used sports activity vehicle, also an SAV acronym, to describe its SUVs, which handle well. That may be indicative of where the Santa Cruz will be priced. Price of the Santa Cruz hasn’t been announced, but a long-rumored Ford Maverick small pickup, smaller than Ford Ranger, is expected to launch and ship later this year and reports say the entry model might be priced in the mid-twenties. Hyundai says an early-reservation system will be active on the Hyundai website by late April. The Santa Cruz is scheduled for production at the company’s Alabama factory beginning in June 2021, with sales starting in summer.
